Description of Work

The North Carolina Zoo is expanding, making this an exciting opportunity to join our team. We are seeking a dynamic, efficient, and enthusiastic individual to serve as a Guest Services - Entertainment Operator / Cashier team member.

In this role, Entertainment team members support the Zoo’s attractions and paid animal encounter areas by delivering an exceptional guest experience and ensuring safe, efficient operations. They work under the direct supervision of Entertainment branch management and may be assigned to locations throughout the park, including the Carousel, Butterfly Garden, Zoofari, Treehouse Trek, and Giraffe Deck, serving as operators or cashiers. Entertainment team members also engage with the public by providing information about NC Zoo habitats, attractions, services, and policies, helping guests navigate and enjoy their visit.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

* Greet guests with a smile while maintaining a friendly and approachable attitude toward guests and staff.
* Display a consistent sense of urgency and professionalism.
* Exercise good judgment and patience when interacting with guests.
* Collect and validate tickets to accurately track attraction and encounter participation each day.
* Safely operate the Carousel, Butterfly Garden, Treehouse Trek, Giraffe Deck, and Zoofari, including managing queuing lines, loading, entry, and mechanical operation where applicable.
* Adhere to all company policies and procedures, including established health and safety practices.
* Perform light housekeeping duties to ensure workstations, ticket booths, and entertainment areas remain clean and safe.
* Assist with additional duties and support other Guest Services areas as needed or assigned.
* Accurately operate and remain fully accountable for a cash register, processing both cash and credit card transactions.
* Collect payments and issue change with accuracy.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Recruitment Range: $15.00 per hour

Management Prefers

  • Experience in guest services or attraction operations, including assisting visitors and explaining program information, with the ability to use ticketing or POS systems if assigned cashier duties.

Position & Physical Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age for most positions (18 to operate the Carousel).

  • Work schedule will consist of flexible shifts including weekends and holidays.

  • Able to work in extreme weather conditions typical of Central NC (heat, rain, or cold) and stand or walk for extended periods.

  • Able to tolerate exposure to outdoor allergens, dust, fumes, odors, loud noises, motion, and vibrations.

  • Able to use radios, telephones, and computers to communicate and follow written and verbal instructions.

  • ​Possess the manual dexterity needed to safely operate rides and handle tools and equipment.

  • Possess sufficient cognitive ability, auditory and visual acuity, and communication skills to perform essential duties and follow general safety practices.

  • Willing and able to work varied and extended shifts, including holidays, weekends, and event support as needed.

  • Able to plan for, work, and staff special events and exhibits, and remain available for unexpected shift needs.

  • Able to work in a variety of physical positions, including sitting, bending, reaching, standing, walking, and lifting or carrying up to 30 lbs.

  • Able to navigate paved, rough, and uneven pathways.

Minimum Education and Experience

Veteran’s and National Guard Preference
