Classification: This is an hourly, as-needed position requiring availability Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with occasional extended hours until 10:00 PM.

Position Purpose: 

The Medical Assistant for JWCH's LAG/USC Recuperative Care Center assists in the provision of direct patient care by performing routine patient care procedures and technical supportive functions within the regulatory scope of practice. The Medical Assistant position plays a vital role in supporting patients experiencing homelessness as they recover from acute medical conditions. This position assists with medical care coordination, supports nursing staff, and ensures the seamless delivery of services to promote recovery and stability. The Medical Assistant also collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to provide holistic care, address social determinants of health, and support patients' transition to long-term housing and resources. 

Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Performs routine (noninvasive) patient care functions as prescribed by licensed health care personnel following established clinic policies and procedures within defined scope of education, training and responsibilities.
  2. Collects and records patient data including height, weight, BMI, temperature, pulse, respiration rate and blood pressure, pulse oximeter, and peak flow measurement. according to established policies and procedures.
  3. Performs lab tests, including finger sticks, after appropriate training and verification of competency.
  4. Administers immunizations and all medications per provider's order after a licensed health care professional verifies the correct medication and dosage.
  5. Performs venipuncture and PPD skin placement. Documents measurement of PPD skin test and reports information directly to the provider or to the Registered Nurse.
  6. Applies/removes bandages and dressings.
  7. Performs other duties and tasks as may be required or assigned.
  8. Assist nursing staff in delivering medical care, including vital signs monitoring, basic wound care, and assisting with activities of daily living as needed.
  9. Facilitate communication between patients and medical providers, ensuring clarity regarding care plans and follow-up needs.
  10. Administer medications under the direction and supervision of licensed medical professionals, adhering to program protocols.
  11. Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records in compliance with privacy regulations and program policies.
  12. Schedule and coordinate appointments with specialists, primary care providers, and other relevant services.
  13. Document patient interactions, progress, and any changes in condition for review by the medical team.
  14. Collaborate with case managers and other team members to ensure patients access services such as housing resources, counseling, and substance abuse treatment.
  15. Provide education and support to patients on health maintenance, medication adherence, and self-care practices.
  16. Assist in coordinating transportation for patients to medical visits, social service agencies, and housing appointments.
  17. Help maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment in the recuperative care facility.
  18. Monitor patient behavior and well-being, reporting any concerns to the nursing or case management team.
  19. Support infection control measures, including sanitizing shared spaces and ensuring proper hygiene practices.

Requirements:

  1. High School Diploma or GED 
  2. Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant school with a current MA certificate
  3. Verification of appropriate hours in approved Medical Assistant course to perform venipuncture 
  4. Current BLS certificate from the American Heart Association
  5. Experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, or substance use disorders preferred.
  6. Strong organizational and communication skills.
  7. Empathy, patience, and a commitment to serving marginalized populations.
  8. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
